The Bulgarian Psychoanalytical Society (BPS) is pleased to welcome for the first time in Bulgaria the distinguished Dr Jonathan Sklar who will be presenting his understanding of post-totalitarian societies and the dynamic of the unconscious in pursuing and defending democracy as a genuine move towards mature and free expression.
Dr Sklar is a prominent British psychoanalyst, training analyst and fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society. From 2007 to 2011 he is the Vice President of the European Psychoanalytic Federation. Currently, Dr. Sklar is European Representative in the IPA.
Originally trained in psychiatry at Friern and the Royal Free Hospitals he worked for four years in psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic in London. For many years he was Consultant Psychotherapist and head of the psychotherapy department at Addenbrookes and Fulbourn hospital in Cambridge. He currently teaches and supervises at the London Institute of Psychoanalysis; leads an MSc course on “Ferenczi and Contemporary Psychoanalysis” at the University College London and teaches in Chicago. Dr. Sklar also gives lectures in Europe, South America and across the world and played a vital role in establishing a psychoanalytical study group in South Africa.
Currently working in full time analytic private practice, Dr Sklar was Balint Trainer for 25 years with general practitioners, psychiatrists in training, psychiatric and general nurses, mental health workers and head teachers.
His most recent interests are in the way in which newly qualified analysts manage in their newly found professional lives. He has dedicated the last chapter of his book “Landscapes of the Dark”, 2011 on the subject.
His psychoanalytic papers have been published in Italian, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. He wrote on the subjects of Regression, Ego-splitting, Psychoanalytic Technique, Gender and Identity and many more.
Dr Jonathan Sklar is visiting Sofia at the invitation of the Bulgarian Psychoanalytical Society as part of the society’s scientific programme. He will be presenting on the topics of Value of Psychosomatics in Medicine and Psychoanalysis and Maternal Sadism in Revisiting “A Child is Being Beaten”.
